Traffic developments during the first quarter
All the various traffic divisions registered growth at Leipzig/Halle Airport during the first quarter of this year. The number of passengers increased by 9.2 percent to a figure of 432,028 between January and March. Freight volumes rose by 1.1 percent to about 301,844 tonnes and the number of aircraft movements increased by 3.7 percent to 18,361 take-offs and landings.
Traffic developments in March
The number of passengers passing through the airport rose by 12 percent to 171,393 during March. Tourist services to warm-water destinations were particularly responsible for this development. The growth was particularly triggered by people travelling to destinations in Spain, Egypt and Turkey. The number of aircraft movements in March totalled 6,466 take-offs and landings, which was 2.5 percent higher than the figure in the previous year.
A new record for freight volumes
At Leipzig/Halle Airport, Europe’s fifth-largest air cargo hub, about 110,419 tonnes of freight were handled during March this year; this represents growth of 2.8 percent compared to the same month in the previous year. As a result, the airport was able to set a new absolute record in its corporate history.
