Condor will initially start flying, followed by SunExpress and Eurowings. Austrian Airlines is launching flights to Vienna again from next Monday onwards.

“Leipzig/Halle Airport is well prepared for the relaunch. Passengers will finally be able to take off from our airport again,” says Götz Ahmelmann, CEO of Mitteldeutsche Flughafen AG, and adds, “We've made all the arrangements to protect people’s health and passengers can naturally be tested at the airport. The critical element will now be that our guests behave responsibly and consistently take note of the distancing and hygiene rules – starting with their arrival at the airport, through the check-in process and their flight until they arrive at their destination.

The first regular passenger service since 18 November last year will be a Condor flight heading for Hurghada in Egypt on Thursday 25 March. This will be followed by a flight to Tenerife on Friday 26 March.

A Condor flight will take off for Fuerteventura on Saturday 27 March. SunExpress will head for Antalya and Eurowings for Las Palmas (Gran Canaria) on the same day. Condor will also offer daily flights to Palma de Mallorca from Saturday onwards.

Austrian Airlines will relaunch its scheduled flights from Leipzig/Halle to Vienna on Monday 29 March and is planning to operate up to four weekly services during the next few weeks.

Testing facilities at the airport

Passengers have to currently present a negative PCR test in order to travel to Spain and Turkey and it is highly recommended when travelling to Egypt too. This test must have been performed during the last 72 hours. Please note that the test result must be in English or the national language at the destination.

A private company has been offering these tests at the airport in the “Co Care Covid 19-Test Centre” since the middle of March; it charges for this service.

Appointments for antigen rapid tests and PCR tests can be directly arranged with the service provider online or at the airport at the registration desk in the check-in area. Please note that the result of a PCR test is not available until about 24 hours later.

Protecting people’s health is the top priority

The Central German airports already made extensive arrangements to protect the health of passengers, visitors, partners and employees after the first lockdown last year. People have to wear a medical mask in the terminals. There are vending machines in front of the buildings where FFP2 masks can be purchased.

Protective plastic panels have been installed at the check-in desk and where boarding cards are examined. Monitors, signs and announcements remind passengers and visitors to comply with the behaviour and hygiene regulations. Markings have also been placed on the floor, so that the current distancing rules can be followed, for example, in the check-in and security control areas. Seats in the terminals are also provided with distance markers.

Passengers must also wear a mask on board during their flight. They should find out about which rules apply from the airline or their tour operator in advance. The same applies to the entry requirements in the destination country and the hygiene rules that apply there.

Information for passengers

In order to be able to start their flight in as relaxed a manner as possible, passengers should arrive at the airport at least 2.5 hours before departure and, if available, use the online check-in facilities provided by their airline. The pandemic makes additional formalities necessary during check-in, so that longer waiting times than normal must be expected. Passengers with departure times before 6 a.m. are recommended to arrive at the airport 3 hours before departure.

Passengers may only take one item of hand luggage on board.

Returning to Germany

The German government is currently planning changes to the Infection Protection Act, which will introduce a general mandatory test for anybody entering Germany. Passengers are therefore requested to find out the details from their airline or their tour operator about how the necessary Covid-19 tests should be conducted before their return flight.

They must also take into account the current rules on quarantine periods for countries like Egypt, which are classified as high-risk areas at this time:

Parking at the airport

Passengers and visitors can use the multi-storey car park and the P20 and P4 car parks.

The multi-storey car park has 2,000 parking spaces on six levels. If the booking is made online, the parking fee for seven days starts at EUR 50. Passengers have direct access to the check-in area via the second level of the multi-storey car park.

It is possible to park for seven days at prices starting from EUR 20 at the P20 low-cost car park. It takes about 15 minutes to walk to the check-in area from there.

Catering facilities and shops open again

Catering facilities and shops are also opening again in line with the relevant timetable. Marché Mövenpick and the Kamps bakery will provide food and drinks again in the arrivals/departures terminal, for example.
