Events at Dresden Airport up to 31 March 2019

4 and 5 January
Elephant, Snow Cutter-blower & Co – the Special Winter Tour

It’s when it’s freezing and snowing outside that the Winter Service at Dresden Airport really comes into its own. With a full range of technology, the team works hard to keep air traffic moving as best it can in wintry conditions. Participants on this tour will not only get exclusive insights into our Winter Service equipment but will also find out what role the airport plays in the Dresden Ski World Cup.

The tour leaves from the airport information desk in the terminal. After a security check and a bus trip across the illuminated apron, you will stop off at the Winter Service hangar. On the way there, there will be opportunities to take pictures and videos of planes taking off and landing, depending on the traffic situation. You’ll also be given a behind-the-scenes look at snow production for the Ski World Cup.

  • Starts: 16:00 (max. 30 people per tour)
  • Price: €10 per person (minimum age: 14)
  • Booking is essential: Tel. +49 (0)351 881 3300 (Mon-Fri 09:00-17:00, outside these times: +49 (0)351 881 3360) or e-mail touren@dresden-airport.de

6 January
Travel and Experience Day with outdoor skiing competition

Sun, sand and sea or city breaks – to herald in the New Year, Dresden’s biggest travel centre will be offering expert travel advice, accompanied by a very special winter sports event.

There will be top travel tips on offer on topics such as non-stop flights to Athens, Barcelona, Bastia (Corsica), Dalaman (Turkey), Larnaca (Cyprus), Monastir (Tunisia) and Thessaloniki in the upcoming summer season. The airlines also offer Dresden passengers a choice of practical connecting flights to cities and holiday destinations across the globe. Transfer times at hub airports are generally short, and with such a wide range of connecting flights from Dresden, there are destinations and dates to suit everyone.

While the grown-ups browse the holiday options and compare offers in peace and quiet, there will be plenty of activities for kids: ice stock (curling), target throwing with snowballs, Teepee World, arts and crafts, face painting and much more besides. There will also be a stage show featuring the popular fairy-tale figures Elsa, Anna and Olaf.

As part of the Dresden Ski World Cup, trials will be held to find Saxony’s fastest cross-country skier over 100 metres. To make this happen, the airport’s Winter Service will be preparing a special stretch of snow around 140 metres in length right outside the terminal. Head up to the visitor platform to get the best view of this event.

Kids keen to follow the example of the athletes will also find plenty of opportunity to get active outside the terminal. Provided the weather plays ball and there is enough snow, upcoming athletes can try out the Skitty World Nordic Obstacle Course outside the west wing, a small, varied cross-country skiing run just for kids. Ski equipment can be hired at the venue.

  • Terminal, 10:00-18:00
  • Early-bird discounts for summer 2019
  • Compete for the title of Saxony’s fastest cross-country skier over 100 metres
  • Fun and games for kids as part of the FIS Ski World Cup Dresden
  • Admission free
  • Parking in the multi-storey car park: €4 (have your parking ticket discounted at the airport information desk or the car park security office)

14 January
Wanderlust – the Travel Talks
“Sri Lanka – Paradies wiedergefunden?” (Paradise Rediscovered?) Speaker: Kay Maeritz

Sri Lanka enchants visitors with its stunning beaches, species-rich uplands, lush nature and the richness of its culture. The grand parades with their countless dancers, drummers and elephants are a never-to-be-forgotten experience. Equally impressive are the temples at full moon. At this time of the day life on the island is at rest and Buddhist pilgrims lay their flower offerings at the shrines.
Kay Maeritz’s journey will take us into the various regions – including areas in the north and east of the country that were closed to visitors until recently. Traces of the civil war are still present there. Many locals find work in tea production, the country’s most important economic sector.

Wanderlust – the Travel Talks
“Tahiti – Südsee pur” (Tahiti – Pure South Pacific) Speaker: Jörg Ehrlich

Glittering turquoise seas, white sandy beaches and lush green mountains make the island of Tahiti a true paradise. Here there are overwater bungalows and crystal clear lagoons that are protected from the open ocean by a coral belt. From your own veranda you can jump straight into the water and snorkel up close to reef sharks, rays and schools of butterfly fish. Like Moorea, Raiatea and Bora Bora, Tahiti belongs to the Society Islands, the main archipelago of French Polynesia. The archipelago is astonishingly diverse: hikers take to the mountains, water sports fans to the sea, food aficionados to the vanilla plantations – and culture lovers to the volcanic islands of the Marquesas more than 1,500 kilometres away.

Wanderlust – the Travel Talks
“Kuba – Rhythmus, Rum und Revolution” (Cuba – rhythm, rum and revolution) Speaker: Paolo Violo

Cuba is bursting with music and cultural diversity. It oscillates between joie de vivre and melancholy. But it is from this very tightrope walk and the daily struggle for survival that a society has emerged that could hardly be more brazen, lively and contradictory. In his talk, travel photographer Pascal Violo will cover everything from the arbitrariness of Cuban officials to the almost inexhaustible talent for improvisation that is so typical of Cubans. He will present breathtaking nature shots and impressive city portraits, interviews with artists and opposition activists, as well as live recordings of musicians he befriended along the way.
