Development of traffic at the Central German airports in Dresden and Leipzig/Halle in 2023
Development of passenger traffic at the Central German airports
929,928 passengers passed through Dresden Airport, which is 10.9 percent more than in 2022. The number of passengers at Leipzig/Halle Airport rose by 34.8 percent to a figure of 2,101,425. This development was largely due to the high and constantly increasing level of demand in the tourist traffic sector. The most popular travel destinations from Leipzig/Halle and Dresden included Turkey, Spain, Greece and Egypt.
Volume of air freight at Leipzig/Halle Airport
Approx. 1.4 million tonnes of cargo were handled at Leipzig/Halle Airport during 2023. This amount was therefore 7.7 percent lower than the figure for the previous year. This development was due to the global economic situation, which inhibited growth, as well as wars and international conflicts. Leipzig/Halle Airport is the third-largest air freight hub in Europe and it achieved growth of 22 percent between 2019 and 2022. This growth was sustained by record demand during the pandemic when supply chains were negatively affected by the closure of borders. The volume in 2023 was more than 12 percent higher than the figure for 2019.
Aircraft movements
Leipzig/Halle Airport registered 80,536 take-offs and landings in 2023, 0.5 percent fewer than in the previous year. The number of aircraft movements at Dresden Airport (20,093) was very similar to the figure in 2022.
