Protecting the environment and having a good relationship with our neighbours are important corporate goals for us at Mitteldeutsche Flughafen AG. We are adopting a large number of measures to maintain a balance between ecology and economics, both when planning and operating the airports at Dresden and Leipzig/Halle. To achieve this, we include all the relevant environmental aspects in our thinking.
Environmental management at MFAG
MFAG has been operating an environmental management system since 2020 and it is geared towards the requirements specified in the international DIN EN ISO 14001 standard. Our environmental guidelines stipulate the principles for our actions.
The environmental management system helps us to systematically examine official requirements as well as laws and regulations and implement them or comply with them. It also helps us to sensitise our employees to the issue of protecting the environment.
Environmental guidelines at Mitteldeutsche Flughafen AG
We, the companies at Mitteldeutsche Flughafen AG, ensure that the region is linked to the domestic and international air traffic network through our airports and their intermodal connections in line with needs.
We operate the airports according to the following guidelines and are fully aware of our responsibility for the environment:
1. We are receptive to ecological requirements.
It is our goal to protect and maintain the environment and the natural basis of life for current and future generations. We therefore believe that protecting the environment is a process of making constant improvements and we therefore use natural resources economically.
We are constantly looking for new ways of creating less pollution in air and water, sparing the natural soil, preventing waste and increasing the energy efficiency of our facilities and buildings.
We particularly pay attention to continually reducing noise and air pollution emissions in our airport operations. One special priority here involves reducing CO2 emissions.
2. We assess the consequences for the environment before we make any decisions.
We systematically identify any operating activities that have effects on the environment. We document and assess them and derive goals and measures for improvements from them – and we monitor their implementation too.
3. Protecting and maintaining the natural ecosystem is very important to us.
We place particular importance on maintaining natural functions and ecological value when managing the open spaces at the airports, in addition to handling the technical issues related to air traffic.
4. We comply with statutory regulations.
It is absolutely natural for us to comply with the environment law requirements related to our operations.
As environmentally-conscious companies, we want to reduce the environmental pollution associated with operating the airports even beyond these minimum requirements, whenever this is possible and if our companies’ economic resources allow us to implement the measures.
We assess the effects on the environment in all our planning work and when making new investments and we then select effective technologies.
5. We are raising our awareness of the environment.
We have our eyes open, are sensitising people to environmental issues and are training our employees to act in an environmentally-friendly way.
We are involved in further improving environmental protection within the corporate group in our own field of operations and beyond in a constructive way.
6. We take into consideration the interests of the surrounding area.
We regularly inform the public about the environmental effects and our efforts to protect the environment. We seek an open, matter-of-fact and critical dialogue with our neighbours, public authorities and the general public.
Nature Conservation
We are actively involved in nature conservation and liaise closely with the relevant authorities.
Climate Protection
We have been recording the CO2 emissions at both the airports since 2011. Effective measures have enabled us to significantly reduce CO2 emissions from airport operations.
Engergy Management
We are adopting many different measures to minimise energy consumption at the Central German airports and organise operations in an increasingly efficient manner.
Water/Soil Protection
Protecting the groundwater and adjacent stretches of water above ground as well as the soil is an important matter for us at Leipzig/Halle and Dresden Airport.
Noise Protection
We are making every effort at Mitteldeutsche Flughafen AG to reduce to a minimum the disturbance caused by aircraft noise for local residents
