Central German Airports: significant growth in passenger numbers in the first half of 2022

Following declines in passenger numbers in previous years because of the pandemic, Leipzig/Halle and Dresden Airports registered significant growth in passenger numbers during the first half of 2022. Overall, the number of passengers at the two airports rose to 901,852 compared to just 95,287 in the comparative period in 2021.

Freight volumes also exceeded the record set in 2021. The number of air-craft movements at the two airports (48,287 take-offs and landings) was also significantly higher than the number during the first half of 2021 (39,634).

Leipzig/Halle Airport

Leipzig/Halle Airport registered 572,848 passengers between January and June 2022. The figure was just 57,227 during the comparative period in the previous year. The number of flight movements rose by 12.5 percent to a figure of 38,817.

Freight volumes during the first six months of the year totalled 767,559 tonnes, an increase of 0.2 percent. Europe’s fourth-largest cargo airport set a new record in 2021 after having handled approx. 1.6 million tonnes.

Dresden Airport

329,004 passengers passed through Dresden Airport during the first six months of the year. The figure was just 38,060 in the previous year. The number of take-offs and landings in Dresden rose by 84.7 percent to a figure of 9,461.
